Tom Checketts
Shaw has also confirmed the return of right back Tom Checketts, another member of the promotion winning side, albeit as cover for the time being. Tom is playing for Brantley Rovers in the Festival League but has signed on a dual registration basis and will be available for midweek games and on occasions when Brantley don’t have a game. “We have done well off the field this season” said Shaw, referring to the 2 new sponsorship deals secured by the club. “We are an attractive proposition for players again now. We will use Tom when we can and see where it takes us in the summer. I’ve got one eye on next season with this one, and I would like Tom to be a part of that. He is a quality player and I am glad to have him back.”

Mark Barber
Mercurial talisman Mark Barber has finally undergone cruciate ligament reconstruction. The influential attacker snapped the ligament just 10 minutes into the season’s opener against Orton Rangers. “I know one player doesn’t make a team,” said Shaw, “but Mark was heart of everything good we do going forward. His ability on the ball is second to none at this level and it has really made a massive impact on our results. It has taken ages for this operation to take place as we had to rely on the NHS – this particular operation is too expensive for clubs at our level to arrange privately. At least it has been done now, and while he will no doubt miss most of next season as well, he will get a lot of care and is completely dedicated to his rehabilitation.” Everyone at EAFC wishes him all the best as he begins his long recovery process.

Byron Motion
Erdington AFC are pleased to announce the signing of Byron Motion from Bromford FC. The highly regarded defender was a member of Paul Shaw’s promotion winning team back in 2007 and has been with Bromford for the last 3 seasons. Shaw said: “With midweek games coming up and a slightly congested programme, it is important that we address our shortcomings in the squad now. I have been looking to add quality defenders for some time as we have had very little competition for places in the back line, which I believe has also led to complacency in the squad. This will keep people on their toes as everyone is aware of Byron’s quality and experience.” Motion will go straight into the squad for the game on Sunday against in form Sutton Gate.
Shaw had recently signed central defender Adam Shakespeare, who has been playing for Sporting Khalsa in the West Midland League this season, but he lasted just 60 minutes before a hamstring injury effectively ruled him out for the rest of the season. “It’s been the story of our season” said Shaw. “The week after I signed Lee Penson he broke his arm and missed a couple of months, and then this happened to Shakey. As fast as I can bring players in I am losing them to injuries.” Fellow defender Adam Williams has now undergone surgery on the groin problem that has hampered his performances this season. “Wills has been playing through the pain barrier for a few months now, which we appreciate. The groin issue has meant that he has been a long way from his best this season, but being so thin on the ground defensively it was essential that he carried on playing. The arrival of Byron Motion thankfully means that we can get this sorted out and get him back to his best now.” Another defender Mark Hield is still recovering from a broken leg sustained against Highcroft Sports. “I saw Mark in the week,” said Shaw. “There have been complications and he is still in his cast. I think we might have to write this season off now as far as he is concerned.”
