Erdington took to the field looking to gain revenge for their defeat at Sutton Gate earlier in the season, knowing that 3 points would take them into the top half of the table. Paul Shaw was finally able to include new signing Byron Motion from Bromford FC, who was returning to the club after a 3 year gap. After a long drawn out transfer affair, Motion took his place at right back, replacing the unavailable Cameron Brierley. The rest of the back 4 plus goalkeeper James Woodward retained their places after performing impressively the previous week. Luke Deakin was unavailable, but captain Paul James was able to return, Adam Hennessey moving to right midfield.

Erdington started brightly, with an excellent cross by Motion being headed wide by Ian Pugh when it looked easier to score. Erdington then opened the scoring after only 5 minutes. A ball forward from Thompson was missed by the goalkeeper, Ian PUGH being on hand to roll the ball into the net.
Sutton Gate then began to get on top and deservedly equalised after 15 minutes when their right midfielder cut inside Penson. Erdington were slow to cover, allowing the player to shoot, beating Woodward at the near post.
Gate had another couple of opportunities which they put wide as they bombarded the Erdington goal. It was no surprise when they took the lead after 25 minutes; a chipped ball over the defence allowed a player to run in behind and give Woodward no chance from close range, with the uncomfortable looking defenders appealing in vain for off side.
Gate were well on top and Erdington’s work rate failed to match the previous game against St Mary & John. Shortly after Gate had another goal disallowed, this time the flag saved the defenders as the impressive right midfielder again beat Woodward with ease.
Towards the end of the half Erdington finally began to raise their game. On 43 minutes a trademark long throw by Hennessey was punched into the net by the Sutton Gate goalkeeper for an own goal. Erdington were glad to come in level, having been second best for most of the half.
HT 2-2
Gate again began the half in the ascendancy, and remained on top for a good 25 minutes. Andy Markham was withdrawn with a nasty looking knee injury shortly into the half, Motion moving to centre back and Fabrice Moutou coming on at right back.
From a Sutton Gate cross Dave Withers climbed above Moutou and headed downwards and across goal; Woodward making an excellent save to his left.
From one Gate attack the right midfielder worked his way into the box unchallenged, Woodward getting down low to make a brilliant save. As the attacker followed up Woodward recovered, making another great save at the near post.
Soon after the dangerous Dave Withers managed to get a shot in from the left which struck Woodward in the face after then keeper got across quickly. Woodward was having an excellent 2nd half.
From that point on, Erdington became solid, with Irons and the impressive Motion performing extremely well.
After 78 minutes the game turned. Dean Campbell’s corner was headed on by Thompson and Liam IRONS scored with an outstanding volley from a tight angle, the big centre back twisting his body to get in a shot that looked very unlikely.
As with the previous week, Erdington won the ball back quickly, forcing a long throw. Hennessey’s throw caused all sorts of problems, and when it was only headed clear to the edge of the box Ian PUGH grabbed his second of the game and his 9th goal in 11 games with another cracking volley which gave the keeper no chance.
Confidence spread through the team immediately. An excellent ball from Thompson almost set Campbell away with the defender covering well, then another excellent ball from Newman put Hennessey in, but he hesitated and failed to get the goal her deserved.
Erdington were then able to play out the remaining minutes, keeping possession well and earning 3 excellent points to move into the top 6.
